I "Misteri" di Trapani hanno origini molto antiche e si pensa derivino da analoghe manifestazioni spagnole. I "Misteri", bellissimi gruppi statuari in stile barocco, vennero affidati alle maestranze trapanesi nel VXII secolo, con atti notarili. Le Maestranze sono diciotto e il loro compito inizia già con il primo venerdì di Quaresima, quando effettuano "a scinnuta du misteri", cioè l'esposizione al pubblico del proprio gruppo statuario. Fra le maestranze c'è molta competizione. Per questo motivo l'addobbo finale viene tenuto segreto fino al Venerdì Santo. Nella Chiesa del Purgatorio, nelle ore precedenti l'uscita delle "vare", l'aria è molto pesante, quasi irrespirabile: un miscuglio di fumo di candele e tensione accumulata fra le maestranze in attesa della processione. Poi l'uscita dei Misteri è accolta da un'immensa folla. Nel loro andare i portatori effettuano diversi caratteristici movimenti, fra i quali: "l'annacata", il dondolamento ritmico; "l'arrancata", un'improvvisa accellerazione per recuperare il terreno perduto; "a vutata", che consiste nel girare improvvisamente la "vara" verso persone facoltose dalle quali ci si aspetta una lauta offerta. Then the escape of the Mysteries is received from an immense crowd. In them to go the bearers they carry out various characteristic movements, between which: the "annacata" one, the ritmic rocking; the "arrancata", an unexpected fast speed in order to recover the lost land; the "vutata", that it consists in turning without warning launches it towards wealthy persons from which expects one lauta offered to us.
